The militant Islamist insurgency is background to much that is happening in West Africa. As well as suffering brought to Muslims and Christians alike with millions of people forced to flee their homes, the church is increasingly targeted. Several of our friends have been attacked, kidnapped, or killed. But in many places, the church continues to stand, and to reach out with love and the gospel.
We have been here in Paraguay as a missionary family since 2015, living in the countryside in a small town called Coronel Oviedo. I, Talita and my husband Rodolfo, together with and our two kids, we have been experiencing the challenges of planting a church and training local people to the glory of God.
Um dia, quando eu estava indo para o escritório, um senhor idoso me pediu para ajudá-lo a descer no ponto de ônibus. Ele era cego. Segurando seu braço, ele me agradeceu muito, falando palavras de bênção para mim. Então ele me perguntou: “meu filho, você conhece Jesus?”
Eu levei um susto! Bem, eu estava lá para testemunhar por Ele para as pessoas através do meu comportamento e palavras! Mas lá estava eu, segurando o braço de um homem idoso, sendo questionado se eu conhecia Jesus.
Temos a missão fabulosa de amar o mundo e, para fazer isso bem, precisamos estar equilibrados emocional, física e espiritualmente. Se não somos, não temos muito para dar (e tendemos a acabar pensando principalmente em nós mesmos!).
“Dê um peixe a um homem e você o alimentará por um dia. Ensine um homem a pescar e você o alimentará por toda a vida”. Esta citação muito usada tem guiado muitos trabalhadores interculturais que buscam ajudar comunidades carentes. Infelizmente, no mundo de hoje, muitas vezes não é tão simples e temos que fazer novas perguntas como “Por que o lago está secando?”, “Por que o peixe não veio este ano?”, “Por que as pessoas ficam doentes quando comem o peixe?” e “Por que os peixes têm plástico no estômago?”
When I was first asked to write something related to “caring for spiritual health in ministry”, my initial response was, “Are you sure? That’s a topic I’m barely starting to come to terms with myself.”
